However, some users said they still preferred Microsoft Office after trying out OpenOffice for a couple of days.

For that reason it is always recommended that computer users not try to change registry keys on their own. Many well meaning but uninformed computer owners have changed a single registry key, only to find that the change they made rendered their computer inoperative. Even if the results are less dire, a bad registry change can still have serious consequences. From slow loading programs to frequent crashes, a damaged registry can cause all kinds of grief.

In order to understand why direct changes to the Windows registry can be so dangerous, it is helpful to understand the various parts of the registry and the information each part contains. The Windows registry is divided into five distinct parts, often called hives. Each hive contains information on a particular aspect of the computer, and that information is used to tell the various pieces of hardware and software what to do.
