Sunday 17 August 2008 @ 3:03 am

When it comes to creating pie charts, using Microsoft Excel is the easiest way to get the job done.

But what if we do not have access to Excel? How else is it possible to create pie charts?

A simple and cheap way would be to draw it and scan it as an image. The pie chart might look just like this.

Not very impressive huh? There must be a better way to create nice looking Pie Charts without using Excel. Continue Reading »

A solution to discover electronic evidence – IBM eDiscovery

Tuesday 12 August 2008 @ 4:59 am

Since December, amendments have been made to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure (FRCP) which requires companies to preserve and produce electronically stored information when facing litigation.

Today 90% of all documents are created electronically (memos, letters, email messages, attachments, spreadsheets) and they require new discovery, retrieval and processing techniques.

With so much information to retain and store, organizations will find it very challenging to produce information accurately and effectively when the need arises.

Because of this, your enterprise might be seeking to implement e-discovery solutions to help in managing information proactively to help litigation response.

On 05 August 2008, IBM has introduced a new Enterprise Content Management (ECM) software to help enterprises meet challenging legal discovery requirement.

The solution is called IBM eDiscovery.

With the solution, an enterprise can:

  • Capture, process, classify, organize and assign retention to electronic information as it is created.
  • Search, cull, hold and export information related to multiple cases in parallel.
  • Gain deeper insight into potential electronic evidence on demand.

IBM eDiscovery Manager will be available at the end of August. For more information on IBM’s eDiscovery software, visit http://www.ibm.com/software/data/content-management/ediscovery.html

How to backup outlook and run it from a USB

Saturday 9 August 2008 @ 12:41 am

A colleage asked me a question the other day.

The question is, Yo Mr. IT, do you know of a way to backup outlook’s data and let it run from a USB?

My answer to him is… Yes and No!

I explained to him further. Basically Yes, you can backup your outlook’s data by going to File > Data File Management. Select the name of your data file and click Settings. You should be able to see a file path. Copy that path then click on Start > Run and paste it on the box. Remove the word Outlook.pst and click Enter. You should be able to see the folder where your outlook pst file is located. Simply copy the Outlook.pst file to your USB and thats how you can backup your outlook data into a USB drive.

Now for the second question where you want to run it directly from the USB, well… the answer is NO, it’s not possible unless Microsoft comes out with a portable version of Outlook which allows us to run Outlook from the USB itself.

He was kinda dissapointed with the answer but he still thank me for showing him the way to backup his outlook.pst file.

Feeling discontent, I went back to my pc and started to Google for possible solutions to actually run outlook from a USB.

I couldn’t find anything which allows outlook to run directly from a USB, but there is something close. Continue Reading »
