A Linux Alternative to Windows OS – Ubuntu
|
|
An operating system (OS) is installed on our machine so that we can run programs and software. Without an OS, our desktop or notebook is just a piece of hardware with nothing in it. Therefore an OS can be considered the heart of our personal computer or notebook.
There are many operating systems out there in the market today. But the two common ones are:
- Microsoft Windows
- Linux
I believe many computer users out there are familiar with Microsoft Windows as it is really simple to use. Photo by Manuel Cernuda.
Linux OS on the other hand is a free and open source OS. Linux distributions are well known for their use in servers, embedded devices, mobile phones to supercomputers.
Due to the rise of netbooks, Linux gained popularity as a desktop / laptop OS through Ubuntu.
Through Ubuntu OS, you can basically perform your daily computing tasks such as browsing, emailing and working on documents. When you install Ubuntu 8.10, many open source software are already preinstalled such as:
- OpenOffice
- Firefox
- Gimp
And if you need more software, there are more thousands of software in the Ubuntu catalogue, all available to download and install… for free. Yes.. Free!
