List of cheaper alternatives to AutoCAD and SolidWorks

cad_mouse2Recently one of my tasks were to obtain quotes to purchase AutoCAD and Solidworks for a friend’s company whose main business was into machine fabrication.

After contacting several vendors to obtain the respective quotes, I was quite shocked to find out that the pricing for both AutoCAD and Solidworks were quite high.

I got to find out that these software are the starting point to many products all around us. Even the mouse that is right beside us now (screenshot), was initially designed using a CAD software. Nice review. I also found your other well done review of specific CADs:

ViaCAD V6 is another alternative to the higher priced CADs. ViaCAD is very similar in function to SolidWorks, does true solid modeling, is very intuitive and is extremely easy to learn. It is also compatible with many other CAD formats and file types. This program usually retails for less than $100 per license.

Another honorable mention is TurboCAD. While not quite as functionable, inexpensive, or easy to use as ViaCAD, TurboCAD Deluxe – normally $149 or less – has enough to offer so that most home users and many small businesses will be well equipped. TurboCAD Pro is much more expensive than Deluxe, but it offers true solid modeling, much more functionality and enough features to satisfy even the most demanding of engineers.
