Choosing the best mobile broadband in UK

Thursday 25 June 2009 @ 12:51 am

usb modemI recently decided to relocate to a smaller town further away from the hectic city so I could have a more quiet and peaceful lifestyle.

The only thing that I wish is available here in the smaller town as compared to the city is better broadband availability and facilities.

One broadband access that’s currently available requires me to have a phone line connection. However, this takes too long to setup and the service provider is really slow in providing the service. Image by Bayliss.

Another option is to go with 3G mobile broadband, which allows access to broadband from anywhere with 3G mobile signal. There is one provider here which provides 3G mobile broadband. However, the internet connection keeps dropping so frequently I couldn’t really get any work done with it. Returned it in within a week!

Browsing through the Internet for other mobile broadband services, I saw this site http://www.broadband-expert.co.uk and made me wish I’m currently residing in the UK. Continue Reading »

Security solutions for small to large enterprises

Sunday 21 June 2009 @ 12:21 am

securityEvery organization no matter how big or small has an office network in place. With an office network, all staffs communicate, share documents, run web applications, and perform many daily office computing tasks.

With so much data and information being transferred around the office network, the big question is, how secure is your organization’s network? Image by CarbonNYC

I have heard of some organization’s critical business being halted simply because a staff plugged in an external drive which carries some viruses from his home pc into the office network. Depending on how powerful and clever the particular virus is, the effects of it can be quite damaging. Some of the harmful things that viruses could do to your office machines includes:

  • Slowing them down
  • Steal confidential information
  • Use the machine to attack other websites
  • Allow other users to hijack the machine
  • Make changes and corrupt files

If an employee’s machine in your organization is infected with a virus, the damage is still minimal. But imagine if your organization with 100 machines all get infected at the same time, it can really bring business to a halt. Continue Reading »

The key difference between Sharepoint 2007 and 2010

Wednesday 17 June 2009 @ 12:13 am

sharepoint-64bitIs your organization already adopting and using Sharepoint Server for collaboration, document management and enterprise content management purposes? If yes, then did you know that there’s going to be a new version released soon? The upcoming version is called Sharepoint Server 2010. Ever wondered what’s the major difference between this new Sharepoint version against all the previous versions?

In terms of features and functionalities, I haven’t seen or heard about any key differences yet but in terms of infrastructure and server requirements, according to Sharepoint Team blog, yes there’s a major difference which is everything will and has to be 64 bit:

  • SharePoint Server 2010 will be 64-bit only.
  • SharePoint Server 2010 will require 64-bit Windows Server 2008 or 64-bit Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • SharePoint Server 2010 will require 64-bit SQL Server 2008 or 64-bit SQL Server 2005.

I don’t think this requirement would affect the large enterprises much. I’m sure they have the resources, funds and requirements to go for Sharepoint Server 2010. Image by trekkyandy. Continue Reading »
