Google vs Bing and why I still use Google over Bing

google vs bingLately I saw some traffic coming from the new search engine Bing.com. Basically, I’m happy to get some additional traffic from this new and upcoming search engine. With MSN previously, I wasn’t getting any traffic from it at all. Maybe it’s because of how the search engine works. Now MSN is powered by Bing. Image by Andrew Mason

I currently use Google for all my searches and decided to give Bing a try just to see if it’s worth switching from Google to Bing for my future searches.

My search requirements are pretty simple and straight forward. I just need the top 5 results to show me  the most relevant sites based on my search terms. The search engine should be able to provide the sites I need fast and spot on.

To test both search engines, I typed in the search phrase “Open Source ERP” and compared the results both engines provided.

Google listed the following top 5 results

Google

While Bing listed the following top 5 results

Bing

Google listed for me two Compiere sites, OpenSourceERPGuru, OpenBravo and a list of ERP software packages by Wikipedia. Compiere and OpenBravo are actual open source erp software while the other two gave me news and a detailed list of open source ERP.

Bing listed for me xTuple, Open-Source-ERP-Site, two Levementum sites, and the same list by Wikipedia. xTuple is an actual open source erp software while Open-Source-ERP-Site and Wikipedia provides information related to ERP.

Comparing both results, these are my thoughts:

While Google provided a combination of open source erp software together with some news and listing, Bing did the same too but included two sites from Levementum – an organization that provides open source consulting services.

Since I’m located in the South East Asia region and Levementum is based in the US, this particular search result provides little value to me.

I guess in terms of search results that both engines provided, I still preferred Google over Bing simply because Google provides to me better and more relevant results. Maybe I should have tested with a few other search phrases but for now I still prefer to use Google.

What I really liked about Bing is the ability to mouse over the search results on the right and it pops up a summary of the site. It helps to provide some key information prior to visiting the site.

I believe with a few more adjustments in Bing, it can certainly do as well as Google. But till then I’m still a happy Googler.

What about you? Google or Bing?
