You have just been promoted and the management has decided to provide you a brand new laptop to replace your three year old machine. However, you’re given just one day to back up all your files, delete and clean up everything that’s on the machine. Image by rpongsaj.
You quickly get your external hard disk ready and copy every single file into it. While backing up the files, you also realize that you may have previously launched some files and sites which were not work related. You’re worried that the IT team or the new machine owner might find out about this, potentially jeopardizing your new position.
If you ever come into a situation like this, you’ll need a way to remove all computer usage traces easily. There are a few ways to remove these usage traces.
One way would be to launch all related applications and from within, find ways to remove the traces. For example in browsers, fire up the options page and clear all data such as browsing history, download history, saved password, etc.
Besides clearing browsing histories and saved passwords, you should also permanently delete files. Did you know that even if your files are emptied from the recycle bin, there are still ways to recover the files via some data recovery tools? In order to permanently delete the files, you’ll need a proper software to delete the file to ensure that even data recovery tools cant recover.
With so many computer usage traces to clean up, the best way would be to utilized a tool called Privacy Eraser to properly wipe all personal information out from the machine.
With Privacy Eraser, all the usage traces which you should remove will be presented to you in a nice user interface so that you don’t miss out cleaning any parts of the machine. You’ll just need to decide which to clean up by checking on some checkboxes.

As you can see from the screenshot above, there are actually many parts within the Windows OS, browsers and applications which can be cleared.
Some features which I find really useful within Privacy Eraser are:
- File shredder to permanently delete files even data recovery tools cannot recover
- Helps to clean up spare and hidden areas for some additional free space
- Ability to run on stealth mode
- Boss mode to instantly hide applications from uninvited persons
- Ability to automatically run clean ups on a predefined schedule
I believe Privacy Eraser should be installed on every machine which is meant for public usage. For example if you have a machine in the business lounge or the receptionist area for people to occasionally use to check their emails or to browse the Internet then Privacy Eraser can be utilized to erase all usage details. By scheduling a Privacy Eraser clean up to run every few hours you can be assured that unauthorized information wont fall into the wrong hands.
Some satisfied Privacy Eraser users are claiming that they no longer need to worry about someone else seeing what sites they have visited. I’m thinking maybe mom or spouse…
If you’re in need for some additional computer usage privacy, do give Privacy Eraser a try by downloading a trial version of Privacy Eraser today!
