How to clean up and regain some hard disk space

Monday 8 September 2008 @ 5:25 am

Recently I realized that my three (3) year old machine is running slowly. Every time I launch an application, it would take at least a minute for it to load up.

Checking through the available space on my hard disk, I see that only 2.5 GB out of 74.4 GB space is available. This must be the reason why my machine is running slowly. Ever since I started using the machine, it has not been cleaned up in anyway. Short to say, everything goes in, nothing comes out!

At the same time, I also needed some space to install a database to work on some programming assignment. Since the size of the database is at least 10 GB, I need to clean up and regain enough hard disk space to be able to start work. Otherwise, I’m stuck as I can’t go screaming to my boss.. I need a new server with big hard disk capacity! Times are bad and I’m sure my boss won’t spend money on a new server just like that.

With this challenge, the only thing I could do is to delete unwanted files and backup the necessary ones to an external HDD. This task itself is a challenge because I do not know where the big files are. Imagine 3 years of data sitting deep inside folders. How would I know which folder holds to the big files? An alternative to Microsoft Outlook

Tuesday 8 July 2008 @ 11:55 pm

Having trouble with the Outlook’s 2GB pst file limitation? According to Outlookpower Answer Team

Microsoft has a 2GB size limit on the Outlook personal folders (.pst) and offline folders (.ost) file types [for Outlook versions prior to Outlook 2003]. Once the folder size reaches or goes beyond that size limit the file will not be useable even if you delete items.

Apparently with this limitation, many are finding older versions of Outlook to be really troublesome when the limit has reached. If you’re seeking for an alternative to Microsoft Outlook, check out the recently lauched Yahoo! Zimbra Desktop.

Some cool features:

  • It’s FREE with no missing features or catches
  • Incorporate all accounts in one place. Zimbra Mail, Yahoo! Mail, Gmail, AOL, Outlook or any other work or personal email account using POP or IMAP
  • You need not connect to the internet to read your mails. It’s a standalone installation just like any other desktop software.
  • On modern Web 2.0 Ajax technology

Some disadvantages of Yahoo Zimbra Desktop:

  • Still in beta version so no support available.
  • Not recommended to run this beta version in production environment.
  • This free version does not have a pst importer.

For those wanting to import your outlook pst into this free version, you can try to upload all your e-mail & folders via imap, export your calendar to ics, and contacts to csv and then import them into Zimbra Desktop.

I think this software is really a neat alternative to read your mails, manage calendars, contacts, document, tasks, briefcase. There’s no other free software which is able to go head to head with Microsoft Outlook. So head on over to Yahoo! Zimbra Desktop to download a copy today.

Open Source Strategy Map and Balanced Scorecard Software

Friday 30 May 2008 @ 8:40 pm

Your organization was recently restructured and has developed its very own vision and mission.

Restructure with mission and vision

With the new vision and mission you plan to create strategy maps and balanced scorecards to fully understand the corporate’s goals and objectives.

In essense, the strategy defines “We are THIS type of Organization” while the scorecard defines “HOW are we THIS type of Organization”.

There are multiple ways to implement strategy maps and balanced scorecard. Some would just draw and chart them out then distribute as a memo to respective staffs. For those who are technology savvy, they would use open source strategy map and balanced scorecard software to help with the implementation.

Strategy Map Balanced Scorecard Software is provided by a campany called Applied PC Systems Pty Ltd based in Australia.

Some of the available features include:

  • The Startup program has 10 modules which include Vision/Mission/Swot, Strategy Map, Balanced Scorecard, Drill-Down Dashboard, Options, Log File and Database Integrity Checker.
  • The Balanced Scorecard Objectives Grid is a highly adaptable multi-purpose table. 15 user defined columns can be defined in a variety of formats.
  • The Initiatives tables are also highly adaptable with 24 user defined columns.
  • The Drill-Down Dashboard module allows column-based cross-referencing throughout the whole Strategic Plan.
  • The Closed Loop Learning Performance system thus originates from the Gantt Chart, back up through the Initiatives & Objectives Tables, the Organizational Tree and finally into the Strategy Map.
