A facilities, asset and maintenance management software

Thursday 24 September 2009 @ 12:13 am

google office in zurichHave you seen Google’s Zurich office before?

The image on the left is a photo of Google’s office in Zurich. Click here to view more pictures of the Google office space. Photo by Zurich.

If you have seen all the photos, I’m sure you will wish that your office can be like that too. With pool tables, bathtubs to relax in and a nice cafeteria, who wouldn’t want to go to work? I read in a comment someone said he wouldn’t mind living and staying in an office like that 24 by 7.

Well, today’s post isn’t going to be able Google’s office but rather a free facilities, asset and maintenance management software for the people who are responsible in managing everything with regards to facilities and assets such as:

  • Office buildings
  • Lifts
  • Elevators
  • Furniture
  • Toilets

Some may think that managing facilities is an easy task but from what I know, there are many aspects to it. In every facility, there are furniture, equipments, lights, water taps. All these needs to be maintained.

The maintenance of these facilities and assets are usually done internally or outsourced to vendors. If a particular maintenance such as lift maintenance, is done by a vendor then a contract needs to be agreed upon and signed. The contract will state some of these key agreements:

  • Maintenance fees
  • The service level agreement and its response time
  • Number of maintenance to be carried out monthly or yearly

It can be quite challenging for organizations to manage multiple facilities and assets which are located in various sites. One way to overcome this would be to utilize a facilities, asset and maintenance management software. Continue Reading »

My Garmin Asus nuvifone G60 experience

Monday 7 September 2009 @ 12:48 am

sample photo taken with Garmin Asus nuviphone G60Recently I got lost while driving together with a friend looking for a some food to eat. This made me wish I had a GPS device with me at that time. The feeling of being lost in an unfamiliar territory freaks me out. The bad experience made me decide it’s time to get a GPS device and my preferred brand is Garmin.

sony ericson j230Around this time, my three year old phone’s (Sony Ericson j230) battery kept dying on me. So instead of buying a new battery, I thought of going for a new phone instead. :)

With so many new gadgets on my mind, I wanted to have just one device packed with all the following capabilities:

  • Standard phone functions (Call, SMS)
  • GPS navigation (Car, Walking)
  • Web surfing via WI-FI or 3G
  • Email
  • Calendar
  • View common files like (PDF, Word, Excel, Powerpoint)
  • Camera
  • Music mp3s
  • Video

I looked around and finally found the Navigation Phone of my dreams…. the Garmin Asus nuvifone G60. Continue Reading »

Open source software and hardware auto discovery tool

Thursday 9 April 2009 @ 12:39 am

serversDoes your organization manage and maintain any of the following applications and servers?

  • Exchange Server for email and messaging
  • LAMP Server for all php and mysql applications
  • Coldfusion for coldfusion applications
  • Windows Server for .NET applications
  • SQL Server or PostgreSQL for databases

If any of above are running within your datacenter or server room, the next question is,  are the servers currently being monitored?

It is vital to know the performance and health of each of the servers to ensure that services are running at all times without any glitches.

In case the server has a problem, the owner of the server has to be the first to be alerted so that he can take the appropriate measure to fix and prevent the problem from reoccuring.

Utilizing the right tools will help your server administrators to proactively monitor servers rather than being reactive to a server error. Image by Jamison_Judd

If a tool is capable of software and hardware auto discovery, that would be even better since all you need to do is to install it and the auto-discovery capability gives you and accurate inventory of all hardware and software which are installed within your infrastructure. Continue Reading »

Friday 23 January 2009 @ 12:25 am

Looking for a new job in IT related field?

Or trying to recruit some fresh talent with software related IT skills?

Recently, wareprise.com has set up an enterprise software job board together with Personforce - an online hiring solution.

For those seeking IT jobs, there are various jobs for you to choose from. Some of the advertised IT jobs include:

  • Enterprise Architect Analyst
  • Hyperion System 9 Consultant
  • .NET Technical Architect

Note that these positions are highly specialized and enterprise software oriented. It’s good to see that there are still demand for IT positions.

From my research and findings, IT automation still plays a key role during these bad financial times. Key IT resources are depended upon to simplify business processes and enhance productivity through successful software implementations which helps the company streamline, automate, conserve energy, cut costs, reduce headcount, and generally do more with less.
